VIKING SHIELD
Reimagining the Viking Shield: A Digital Craft Journey
Inspired by the ancient Viking culture, we embarked on creating an artwork that transcends the boundaries of time with the Viking shield project. This initiative reinterprets the traditional Viking shield through the lens of modern digital modeling and visualization techniques. Utilizing Blender, Adobe Substance, and interactive web technologies, this work merges a historical icon with today’s integration of art and technology.
In this project, from modeling to texturing, UV mapping to the final visualization, we have paid great attention to both the aesthetic and technical details of the work. Furthermore, by presenting the piece as an interactive web experience, we offer viewers the opportunity to explore the Viking shield with their own eyes and examine its details closely.

Modeling in Blender
Embark on a journey back in time with the Viking Kilpi project, where ancient craftsmanship meets modern digital artistry. This piece showcases the meticulous modeling of a Viking shield in Blender, a testament to both historical accuracy and creative design. Our digital sculpting process breathes life into this iconic piece of Norse heritage, ensuring every dent and wood grain tells a story of battles fought and seas conquered.

UV Mapping
Precision and care define our UV mapping technique, laying the groundwork for stunning visuals. By unwrapping the Viking shield model with finesse, we’ve prepared it for the next crucial step - texturing. This process guarantees that every texture aligns perfectly with the model, enhancing the realism and depth of the shield’s surface.

Texturing in Adobe Substance
In the texturing phase within Adobe Substance, we meticulously applied a series of layered textures to the Viking shield, employing a diverse range of finishes that capture the essence of its historical context. Starting with base wood textures, we incorporated varying degrees of wear and tear to emulate years of usage and exposure to elements. The metalwork elements received a detailed treatment, with attention to achieving realistic metal textures that reflect historical forging techniques.

Images in Blender
In the rendering phase within Blender, we utilized its robust rendering tools to bring the Viking shield model to life with precision and clarity. Key to our approach was the implementation of advanced lighting techniques to accurately simulate natural and artificial light sources, ensuring that the shield’s textures and materials were rendered in realistic detail. We paid particular attention to the material properties of each component, adjusting reflectivity, roughness, and bump mapping to achieve a true-to-life appearance of both the wooden and metal parts of the shield.

The rendering settings were carefully configured to balance quality and efficiency, employing ray tracing for accurate shadow casting and light dispersion. Each rendered image is a product of a meticulous setup, aiming to present the shield in a clear, detailed, and realistic manner without overstatement, showcasing the model’s geometry and material quality under various lighting conditions.

Interactive Presentation with HTML, CSS, Javascript, and Three.JS
Experience the Viking shield in a whole new dimension through our interactive online presentation. Combining HTML, CSS, Javascript, and Three.JS, we’ve crafted a digital experience that allows you to explore the shield in detail. Rotate, zoom, and interact with the shield, getting up close with its design and texture work in a way that static images cannot convey.
